Maurice Tripotin who is responsible for the barbets at the club, took the initiative of organizing a
preparation day for the BTE test November 26th 2005 in the Brenne region of France. It was a cold, but sunny day and everyone gathered around the pond in this beautiful area. 8 barbets and 3 caos were present. Mr Pelletier, who is a professional trainer and used to water dogs came to give guidance to the owners. Without going into a lot of details about the dogs seen, as there is an article in preparation by Françoise Loiseau and Maurice (that will be translated into English) for the next club bulletin, I woul just like to talk about 2 of the barbets that appeared above average, and I won’t mention Mr Georgii ‘s barbet on purpose as she is well -known for her talent as a hunter. The 2 barbets are Thelma (de la perte aux loups) and Arkann, both of these dogs having real aptitudes and flair for hunting . Let’s not forget that both were discovering game birds and not the mere floatable toy. They were off to flare, track down and retrieve a duck. I really enjoyed Arkann an 11-month-old puppy, excellent model, passionned by the search of a duck, tracking the scent to find it and retrieve it. The owners now need to follow the advice given by Mr Pelletier by putting their barbets in regular contact with fowl. It seems to me that it would be possible to create a “working dog line”, by mating the bitches with studs that have the BTE. We can only applaud the initiative taken by Maurice Tripotin, in organizing this day, thank Mr Pelletier for being so available, Mr Georgii for his legendary generosity and who offered the ducks that were used. Such events should be resceduled in France and it would be the opportunity to discover hunting dogs and perhaps in the near future, for the club to organize a BTE with a higher success rate for Barbets, the future and the development of the barbet, in my opinion needs to go through that step.
